In India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the legal authority responsible for granting food licenses to all food business operators (FBOs). According to Section 31(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, it is mandatory for every FBO in the country to obtain a license from the FSSAI.

The Impact of Conducting Business Without an FSSAI Registration

Undertaking any food-related enterprise without a legitimate FSSAI registration/license, excluding individuals exempted under sub-section (2) of section 31 of this Act, whether directly or through a representative, for activities like production, sale, storage, distribution, or importation of food products without proper authorization, may result in consequences. The potential consequences for such actions may involve a maximum imprisonment of six months and a fine of up to five lakh rupees.
