What is FSSAI?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the statutory authority established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 for regulating and supervising food safety in India.

Every Food Business Operator (FBO) engaged in the manufacture, processing, storage, distribution, transportation, import, export, sale, or supply of food products is generally required to obtain the appropriate FSSAI Registration or License before commencing business, subject to the applicable provisions.

The objective of FSSAI is to ensure that food products available to consumers are safe, hygienic, and meet the prescribed quality standards.

Regulatory Framework

FSSAI compliance is governed by:

  • Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006
  • Food Safety and Standards Rules, 2011
  • Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011
  • Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations
  • Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations
  • Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations
  • Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations
  • Notifications, Orders, Guidelines, and Advisories issued by FSSAI from time to time

Food Business Operators are required to comply with licensing conditions, food safety standards, hygiene requirements, packaging and labelling norms, and record maintenance requirements.

Types of FSSAI Registration & License

Depending upon the nature, turnover, capacity, and scale of operations, an FBO may require:

Basic FSSAI Registration

Applicable to eligible petty food businesses falling within the prescribed eligibility criteria.

State FSSAI License

Applicable to medium-sized food businesses operating within the limits prescribed by FSSAI.

Central FSSAI License

Applicable to large food businesses, importers, exporters, large manufacturers, businesses operating in multiple States, Central Government agencies, airports, seaports, and other entities as prescribed under the regulations.

Our professionals help determine the appropriate category of Registration or License applicable to your business.
